The Wall Street Journal reports (12/3/09 In Lean Times, Restaurants Barter for Trade Services), that more and more independent restaurant owners are discovering a secret that a few restaurant owners have used for many years--trade exchanges, better known as barter exchanges, can help to fill tables, retain experienced employees and get needed products and services.
The Food Channel identified trading for food as one of their top 10 trends for 2010. Says the article: " It's not a straight trade anymore, because people have come to realize that what one person makes may not be what the other person needs."
Community Connect Trade Association (CCTA) members offer many products and services that Denver restaurant owners need, including advertising and marketing, oven hood cleaning, pest control, accounting/bookkeeping, payroll, bar supplies, construction contracting services, cleaning services, coffee roasting, website design and hosting, landscape design and maintenance. Some CCTA members even use their trade credits to pay their rent. In addition, CCTA is part of a large network of trade exchanges, allowing members to also trade for hotels and other travel related services when they are visiting other cities in the US or abroad.
Empty tables at a restaurant are excess capacity--inventory that expires. By filling the tables with trade exchange members, restaurant owners can earn trade credits that they can then turn around and spend for needed products and services.
